Natural Disaster Mitigation Programme
The main aim of the Natural Disaster Mitigation Programme (NDMP) is identifying and addressing natural disaster risks.
The Natural Disaster Mitigation Programme provides funds for a range of measures including natural disaster risk management studies, mitigation works, measures and other related activities that contribute to safer, sustainable communities better able to withstand the effects of natural disasters. The previous NDRMSP has become a part of this new program.
The challenge for those involved in natural disaster mitigation is to reduce the current natural disaster damage bill and limit the increase in future damage while at the same time continuing to manage and address issues associated with sustainable occupation and use of natural disaster prone areas.
The Australian and State governments will partner projects with local agencies that contribute to the following outcomes:
- achieve a fundamental structural reform in natural disaster management - a shift beyond recovery and relief, towards cost-effective, evidence based disaster mitigation across Australia;
- achieve safer, more sustainable communities in relation to their exposure to and management of natural disasters;
- reduce risk, damage and losses to communities from natural disasters including economic, social and environmental; and
- ensure that investment in mitigation can be measured to identify savings opportunities and cost benefits over time.
