04/2/2009
Stay away from flooded drains or causeways
Emergency Management Queensland has warned people to be aware of the dangers of flash flooding on roads and in drains, creeks and causeways with heavy rain currently falling in areas along the south east coast.
At 12pm, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for the south east coast district. Dangerous surf and flash flooding is likely between Double Island Point to Point Danger.
Between 10am and 1pm today, 121 calls for assistance have been made to the SES 132 500 number.
State Emergency Service volunteers in the Brisbane, South East and North Coast regions have been activated to tarp leaking roofs and undertake sandbagging jobs. The majority of jobs are in the Noosa (36), Maroochydore (31) and Caloundra (10) areas.
Residents in the Sunshine Coast area especially are encouraged to be alert for flash flooding.
Flash flooding has the potential to make drains, ditches, causeways and rivers very dangerous and people are advised to stay well away from these areas.
Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:
• Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
• Beware of fallen trees and powerlines. Report fallen powerlines to Energex immediately on 13 62 62.
• If near the coastline, stay well away from the water's edge.
• For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
