Flash flooding – south-east Queensland
04/14/2009

Emergency crews were kept busy overnight assisting residents across south-east Queensland after heavy rain overnight and yesterday.

SES volunteers on the Sunshine Coast responded to about 40 jobs between Gin Gin and Maroochy, including 12 jobs at Maroochy and Noosa. Localised flooding has cut roads into Kin Kin, Pomona and Cooran.

SES volunteers rescued five tourists from a car at Kin Kin and also retrieved a family from a house on Wahpunga Road at Kin Kin after concerns about the home’s electricity supply. SES volunteers spent several hours attempting to reach the family of two adults and two children at the Wahpunga Road home and were successful in the early hours of this morning.

SES assisted about 40 Deception Bay residents with sandbagging their homes. Volunteers also attended to about 20 jobs in the Caboolture area, about 10 at Petrie and several more at Deception Bay, Warner and in the Brisbane area. The majority of these jobs related to assistance with leaking roofs. A further 15 SES jobs relating to leak roofs were also reported at Ipswich.

Brookfield – swift water rescue
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service swift water rescue officers rescued a man in his 20s who was found clinging to a tree with his dog on Bundaleer Road at Brookfield about 2.50am. The man is believed to have been uninjured.

Emergency Management Queensland urges people to be aware of the dangers of flash flooding and avoid driving, walking or riding through floodwaters.

Residents are reminded to contact the SES on 132 500 for emergency assistance during storms or floods.
