SCDO Update 13 - Ex TC BENI as at 5.00pm, 10 Feb
02/10/2003

SUMMARY

Flood Warnings remain current for the following river systems in Queensland:

· Lower Dawson and Fitzroy Rivers;
· Burnett River;
· Warrego River;
· The Paroo River; and
· The Alice and Barcoo Rivers.

For further detail on these flood warnings, refer to the Bureau of Meteorology web site www.bom.gov.au.

COUNTER DISASTER AND RESCUE SERVICES DISTRICT – ROCKHAMPTON

Major flooding is continuing to ease along the Lower Dawson River between Baralba and Newlands. Minor to moderate flooding is expected to continue along the Fitzroy River during the next few days.

Some moderate flooding is expected at Rockhampton during Wednesday/Thursday however local expectations are that water levels will not reach low lying residential property. Rockhampton City continue to make preparations for minor to moderate flooding later this week. Rockhampton City Disaster Coordination Centre and the Rockhampton Disaster District Coordination Centre will continue to maintain a watching brief on the flooding situation within the District.

The Gladstone Disaster District Coordinator continues to monitor the situation however no further issues are expected to arise from flooding in the Gladstone Disaster District. Local Government Disaster Coordination Centres within the District have deactivated.
COUNTER DISASTER AND RESCUE SERVICES DISTRICT – BURNETT

Floodwaters in the Burnett are currently downstream of Walla and the flood peak will arrive in Bundaberg today but is expected to remain below minor flood levels. The situation is being monitored however no issues are likely to arise from this minor level of flooding.

COUNTER DISASTER AND RESCUE SERVICES DISTRICT – SOUTH WEST

The Paroo and the Warrego Rivers both have flood warnings current. For the Warrego, river rises and moderate flooding is expected to extend downstream to Cunnamulla during the next week. Some moderate flooding was experienced at Augathella today, but no issues have been reported. At Charleville, some minor flooding is occurring with river rises continuing today to peak just under moderate flood levels tomorrow.

Some flooding is occurring in Tambo Shire along the Barcoo River leading to a possible need for fodder drops for isolated properties. Coordination of fodder drops remains the responsibility of the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Local Governments have been advised to coordinate their requirements with their local DPI staff.

COUNTER DISASTER AND RESCUE SERVICES DISTRICT – CENTRAL

Rain has fallen in most of the Central West although some areas have not received significant amounts. Significant river rises causing moderate flooding are expected along the upper reaches of the Barcoo and Alice Rivers today and tomorrow. High rainfall in the upper reaches of the Alice and Barcoo Rivers occurred over the weekend. Minor flooding is expected at Blackall. Moderate flooding is expected at Jerico. However no significant issues are expected to arise.

OUTLOOK

The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting reduced rainfalls over much of central and southern Queensland reducing the impact of flooding. Most flooding in the above areas is expected to remain at the minor to moderate levels only with minimal impact on communities. Damage to infrastructure including roads and bridges is expected to be revealed once floodwaters recede.

No further Situation Reports will be issued by the State Disaster Coordination Centre unless the situation deteriorates.
